Our Philosophy of Marketing
We have been around marketing and some superb marketers for a while.
We have strong ideas.
- Marketing is the most critical function in any business.
- Marketing is the first responsibility of the CEO and a function of everyone in the company.
- Love your customers, even in tough times. If they are not lovable, find others who are.
- Talk to your customers face-to-face at every opportunity.
- Insist on excellence. Never accept less.
- Be irreverent, skeptical, and questioning, like a small child, to discourage groupthink.
- Decision-making is a critical process. Frame the questions and gather sufficient information.
- Be modern. The Web has changed everything. Ride the wave.
- Never have “enough” people. Hire a small, very smart, multi-talented team.
- Hire exceptional freelance creative talent but don’t try to “institutionalize” them.
- Try real marketing experiments with real customers. Asking is never as good.
- Only use advertising if you can’t talk directly with every customer.
- Know your customers and their needs; speak right to them with benefits they want.
- Be lean and proud. Develop marketing budgets from a zero-base. No junkets or boondoggles.
- Be authentic. Everyone hates a bullshit artist.
Working like this brings:
- Long-term business growth.
- Sustained profitability.
- Satisfied customers, within the bounds of human frailty.
- Good decisions.
- Common focus and momentum in team work.
- Shared marketing knowledge and values.
- Discipline and rigor.
- Well-earned pride, fun, and fulfillment.
